Bulk or Cut - Should I Build Muscle or Lose Fat First? I’ve previously covered the basics of bulking and cutting the right way and the wrong way. In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap. When cutting, the true goal is to lose fat while maintaining all of the muscle you’ve built. If you do it the wrong way like so many people do, you’d gain too much excess body fat while bulking and/or lose too much lean muscle while cutting and basically spin your wheels and get nowhere. A person would then alternate between phases of bulking and cutting until they’re as lean and muscular as they desire. Now after hearing all of this, there are always three questions that come to mind. Which phase should I start with? Should I bulk or cut first? How long should each phase last before switching to the other? The hell with these stupid phases, why don’t we all just lose fat and build muscle at the same time? Now those last two questions are really good and I get asked both all the time. The thing is, their answers are a little complicated and will take an entire article of their own to properly explain. As it turns out, I’ve recently answered #3 over here: How To Lose Fat And Build Muscle At The Same Time. But right here and now, it’s the first question that I want to focus on and answer. Should I Build Muscle or Lose Fat First? If you’re asking this question, then there’s one safe assumption I can make about you. Obvious, right? But I mention it to make sure we understand that if you’re just fat and don’t really care much about building muscle, you wouldn’t be asking this question. You’d just lose fat first because that’s the primary (or only) goal you care about. The same goes for if you’re already pretty lean/skinny. In that case, you don’t care about losing any more fat. You just can’t figure out which to do first. And in that case, while there are a few factors to consider when making this decision, there’s one that matters more than all of them. Aside from just giving yourself a longer “clean up” job to do when you finally cut (which only increases the potential for muscle loss), this also means you’re going to spend a nice amount of time during the year unnecessarily looking like crap. Wow, fun! For these reasons (and others), starting a bulk (and therefore creating the caloric surplus required for building muscle) when in an already- fat state is just a recipe for disaster. Instead, the ideal starting point for a muscle building phase is when you are at least somewhat lean. How lean exactly? Well, you don’t have to be super ripped with an 8 pack or anything like that (although you certainly can). So, here’s my advice. Take off some clothes and look in the mirror. Or, take some pictures. Do you look like someone whose #1 goal right now should be losing fat or building muscle? Use your best unbiased judgment here. Would you consider yourself “at least somewhat lean” and ready to start building some muscle, or would you consider yourself in too much of an already fat state to create a caloric surplus and gain the small amount of fat that will almost always accompany even the smartest of smart bulks? Then, find your answer below. Your results will be WAY better this way, trust me. That doesn’t mean you should hold off on (or stop) weight training until you reach that point of leanness. You should definitely still weight train the entire time. It will help a bit with the fat loss, and even more importantly, it’s the ONLY WAY you will maintain the muscle and strength you currently have. The South Beach Diet follows a Mediterranean approach to eating, and a Mediterranean diet is akin to a Paleo diet because it is based off of eating what is available in local region. There are of course some stark differences, including a Mediterranean diet allowing grains, dairy, and legumes while reducing the amount of meat being consumed. So while the two share some similar practices, they are very different. Success can be had with either diet when followed properly. Is Paleo the same as gluten free? Paleo is inherently gluten- free because it is grain free, and that includes wheat. It’s possible to eat a gluten- free diet that isn’t Paleo, because dairy, legumes, and other foods are gluten- free but not allowed on the Paleo diet. Is Paleo or vegan better? This really comes down to your own feelings on animals and whether or not you want to eat them as well as the things they produce. Both a Paleo and vegan diet would be preferable to eating tons of refined and processed foods. Paleo may be easier to follow for the long term because while they both exclude a large number of foods, Paleo is meat- centric and there are always plenty of meat dishes you can cook up, and meat is always easy to find. Is Paleo or vegetarian better? A vegetarian diet has been shown to reduce the likelihood of heart disease and cancer. While the same can’t be said for Paleo because research into the diet is forthcoming, there is reason to believe that eating the Paleo way also helps in these areas. This basically comes down to your own feelings towards eating meat. Paleo will exclude things like grains and dairy, which a vegetarian would consume, and which more and more evidence points to these being detrimental to your health. As long as you don’t mind eating meat, Paleo appears to be the winner here. Is Paleo a low carb or no carb diet. Paleo is not about counting carbs or limiting your carbs for the sake of losing weight. For many this diet plan will likely be a reduction in the number of carbohydrates consumed because Paleo does away with foods that are laden with carbohydrates, and has you getting your carbs from better sources. Is Paleo a low calorie diet? Paleo is not a calorie- counting diet, but when compared to the Standard American Diet it will contain fewer calories. Compared to a diet centered on reducing calories, it is not a low calorie diet because many of the foods that are recommended, meats for example, are calorically dense. Is Paleo low glycemic? While Paleo doesn’t set out to be low glycemic, when you eat according to the Paleo recommended food list you’ll be choosing foods that rank low on the GI scale. Is Paleo a weight loss diet? One byproduct of following the Paleo diet is typically weight loss, and many use the diet for this result. But Paleo is more of a philosophy, and more about giving your body the fuel it needs to live your life to the fullest. Is Paleo just another fad? Paleo has the potential for being a fad because it has reached mainstream consciousness and awareness. This means that a large number of people will try it for a little while, and eventual want to stop because it is a “diet” and they’ll feel like they are being restricted from eating the foods they want. But aside from being coined as a term for a diet, it is bigger than any one book or “movement” and there are a number of different resources available for those looking for reliable information regarding how to live and eat Paleo. Is Paleo cheap or expensive? Paleo can be a bit more expensive than a typical diet because the quality of the food you eat is just as important as what you’re eating. You should opt for organic fruits, vegetables, meats, and nuts whenever possible. These come at a premium price compared to their conventional counterparts. If you are eating out at restaurants and buying pre- packaged foods from the grocery store, you might find that you spend about the same or even a bit less when doing Paleo, so it depends on your current food expenditures in relation to the cost of eating the Paleo way. Is Paleo clean eating? HCG Diet Dangers? If you’ve been looking for a way to lose weight you’ve might have heard of the HCG diet. I say you might have heard about it because news is starting to spread about the great results that people are having. But are there any dangers to the HCG diet, or is it a safe way to lose weight? I’m going to lay out the facts to you so you can actually know the answer to this question. I know there are a lot of strong opinions out there, and there is even more bad information being spread by misinformed people and peddlers of other diets trying to convince you their diet is “better” or safer. And all of these people have zero experience with the diet and have never gone on the diet themselves. Well I have been on the diet and I personally know countless numbers of people who have also completed it. I’m also a medical researcher and I’ve done my homework. I have nothing for you to buy on this site and I’m writing this to help you learn the truth about the HCG diet so you can make an informed decision of your own. So, are there any HCG diet dangers or side effects that you should be aware of? Well, that depends on how you do the diet. For example, you can use the old injection method which requires you to take an HCG shot every day. This is effective and numerous people have done it successfully. But I must warn you, injections can be dangerous. I would never recommend the injection method to anyone unless they are seeing a doctor every couple of days and you have a proper prescription to get the injections of HCG. This is because injections are serious business and bring complications with them. Of course you can get your HCG injections online from overseas vendors but you don’t know what you’re getting and it is probably illegal. Also the injections can cause blood clots and other side effects that are serious. So the injections work but make sure you are supervised by a medical professional, and be aware of the downsides like increased cost and some risks. And these downside are why the injections are not my preferred way of doing the HCG diet. But the second way of doing the HCG diet is my preferred way of doing it. And that preferred method is to use a new oral hormone- free HCG diet product known as HCG Diet Accelerator. This method has you take an HCG Diet Accelerator product while on the diet plan. All you do is take an oral capsule by mouth several times a day. It’s been shown to be just as effective as the injections during the plan but there are more benefits to doing it the oral way. For example, it’s a lot cheaper to use the oral capsules and this is primarily because you don’t need a prescription to get it and there are no expensive drug companies to mark up the price and that makes it easier to get. Also with an oral product you don’t need some big dose of HCG for the diet to be effective. You can take the HCG Diet Accelerator version but still get the best results, which makes it safer and a more natural approach. The other benefit is that it’s more convenient. Swallowing a few capsules by mouth is a lot simpler than mixing your HCG, preparing the syringe, and then injecting it. And since it’s easier it’s almost impossible to mess up making it fool- proof. Also most people do it from home on their own and don’t need any doctor’s assistance. The only thing you have to be careful about is where you get your oral HCG diet product from. There are a lot of scams out there selling worthless stuff so make sure you go with a good company that has a great product that is also made in a FDA certified lab. Also make sure they have great support because you will have questions. And so I don’t have to answer 1.
